After Texas statehood in 1845, cattlemen started to move longhorns up the trail to northern markets. Kansas, the first state north of Indian Nations, became the most important strategic player in this cattle-trailing industry and for decades influenced its pathways. For forty years, as the industry adapted to changing circumstances and drovers blazed different routes across Kansas.
