McCormick School Museum - WGS Member Tour April 29th, 2023

The Wichita Genealogical Society and arranged with the McCormick School Museum to conduct a private introduction and tour of the McCormick School Museum in Wichita for Members of WGS. The museum houses many records of students, teachers, and staff from most schools in the city that can be of great benefit to the genealogist and family historian.


The tour is on Saturday, April 29th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 at the museum which is conveniently located 855 S. Martinson which is near Seneca and Kellogg.

Arrive about 12:45. We will have a short presentation of the tour and the genealogy records that are available. 


After the presentation, the tour will be self guided with staff in each room to answer questions.

Members arrive by their own transportation.  A large parking lot is adjacent to the school. 

Note: The school is not ADA compliant and there are a couple short flights of stair. A grant application is pending for this addition.

Overview

After a welcome and overview, you will be able to visit each of the rooms below on your own. McCormick and WGS volunteers will be available to explain the rooms, answer questions, and provide other assistance.        

    • 1890s Classroom – Restored in 1978 with original chalkboards, cast iron and wood desks, original classroom pictures you will remember of presidents, and much more.
    • Kansas Heritage Room – Everything from period stoves, tools, wagon wheels, Jesse Chisholm items, farm tools, and many things you will ask “what is that?”
    • Wichita (East) High School Science Classroom – Amazing 1920s science room with chemistry lab tables, burners, steam baths, and all manner of science equipment and glassware.
    • School Room Through the Years – Every imaginable school desk throughout the 20th century, plus nearly every kind of typewriter used in typing classes.
    • WPA Doll Room – Along with other artifacts, this is one of the largest collections of WPA dolls, created right here in Wichita during the 1930s.
    • Crystal McNally Library – Special collection of unique and rare books and Wichita’s largest collection of School Yearbooks. A book lovers dream.
    • Archival Room – Records from as far back as the 1880s of students, teachers, and staff.
  • The McCormick School Museum is very easy to find. This map shows its proximity to a familiar place, our Advanced Learning Library, of the Wichita Public library.
